Skin Booster Treatment and Mesotherapy for the Face: What They Are and How They Differ

In short
- Mesotherapy is the name of an injection technique into the dermis. A skin booster is the name of a product group. The two terms overlap a lot. [1][2]
- Ingredients include hyaluronic acid, vitamin and amino acid mixes, PN and collagen, but evidence for mixed formulas is thin and there is no central standard. [2][3][4]
- Anything injected into skin must be a registered drug or medical device, given by a doctor in a licensed facility. Cosmetics must not be injected. [9][10]
What is mesotherapy for the face (skin booster treatment)?
Face mesotherapy is the injection of small amounts of a substance at many points into the dermis with a short needle; the word names the technique, not one substance. [1][4] The academic names are mesotherapy and intradermal therapy. [1] The Thai search term "ฉีดหน้าใส" (injection for a clear, bright face) points to the same kind of injection on the face.
Research describes face mesotherapy as injecting substances such as hyaluronic acid, vitamins, minerals and amino acids into the upper dermis. [3] In theory, these sit close to fibroblasts, the cells that build the skin's structure. [3] The aim is more hydrated skin and cells working in a better environment. [4]
"Glow" has no standard measure behind it. An advisory panel of 10 experts said there are no standardized criteria for good skin quality, and described skin quality in four parts: evenness of tone, evenness of surface, firmness and glow. [5]
How is face mesotherapy different from a skin booster?
| Point | Face mesotherapy | Skin booster |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A technique for injecting substances into the dermis [1] | A name for products injected to improve skin quality [2] |
| Substances found | Mixed formulas, for example hyaluronic acid, vitamins, minerals, amino acids [3] | Hyaluronic acid is the most used; other groups include PN and collagen [2] |
| Standards | A 2008 review says the benefits, safety and standardization of mesotherapy still need assessment [12] | The 2024 review authors say skin booster materials and procedures still need standards [2] |
| Check before injection | Substance name, maker, and registration as a drug or medical device with the Thai FDA [9] | Substance name, maker, and registration as a drug or medical device with the Thai FDA [9] |

The two terms overlap: mesotherapy is the way of injecting, while skin booster is the name for a group of products injected to improve skin quality. [1][2] Some papers call a mixed formula injected into the face polycomponent mesotherapy. [3] A 2024 review uses "skin booster" as the umbrella heading for injectables that improve skin quality. [2]
The term "skin booster" began as the trade name of one hyaluronic acid product and then became a generic word. [2] The same review sorts skin boosters by polymer type, natural or synthetic, and says their composition varies widely. [2]
For the difference from fillers, read [[skin-booster-vs-filler]]. In short, skin boosters aim to improve skin quality rather than add volume mechanically. [2]
What is in face mesotherapy and skin boosters?
Reviews list hyaluronic acid, mixes of vitamins and amino acids, PN, collagen, intradermal botulinum toxin and collagen stimulators, and the evidence differs between groups. [2] To read hyaluronic acid names on a label see [[hyaluronic-acid-label]], and for PN see [[rejuran-pn-polynucleotide-explained]].
A formula with many ingredients is not automatically better. The author of a maker-supported article says combining many components is not enough to show the formula works, because they must stay stable in the formula. [3] The idea that skin cells need extra building blocks and energy has not been thoroughly investigated. [3]
- Hyaluronic acid (HA), non-cross-linked or lightly cross-linked: the most used agent in this group, it helps skin hydration. [2] Non-cross-linked HA gave inconsistent results in some studies, possibly because body enzymes break it down quickly. [2]
- Mixes of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and HA: called polycomponent or cocktail formulas. [2][3] The review authors say the stability and interaction of mixed ingredients lack evidence. [2]
- PN and PDRN: DNA chains taken from salmon-family fish, used for skin repair; the review says larger and longer randomized studies are needed. [2]
- Injectable collagen such as atelocollagen: the review authors say more clinical and laboratory research is needed. [2]
- Intradermal botulinum toxin: a 2024 review reports better elasticity and hydration. [2] A separate meta-analysis found no effect on skin hydration and said more high-quality studies are needed. [13]
- Collagen stimulators such as PLLA, PDLLA and PCL: the review includes them among injectables used to improve skin, and they may cause more visible and longer-lasting lumps than HA. [2] See [[collagen-stimulator-types-explained]].
Does face mesotherapy work, and how strong is the evidence?
Some studies report more elastic and radiant skin, but data on HA mesotherapy for facial rejuvenation are scarce, and mixed formulas lack strong controlled studies. [2][4] The authors of one trial opened their paper by saying data on this method are scarce. [4]
In a randomized trial of 55 women, non-cross-linked HA was injected into one cheek and saline into the other. Skin elasticity improved compared with before treatment, and radiance was significantly better than the saline side when measured 3 months after the end of treatment. [4] The manufacturer funded this study. [4]
For a product assessed by a regulator, the US FDA approved one cross-linked HA gel in May 2023 for intradermal injection to improve cheek skin smoothness in adults, and classes it as an injectable dermal filler. [6][7] The patient labeling says the improvement lasted 6 months in most participants. [8] That approval covers that one product and the cheeks only, not every mesotherapy formula. [7]
A 2024 review concluded that specific scientific data are lacking, objective measurement is difficult, and controlled studies of mixed formulas are limited. [2] A 2008 review found both safety and efficacy of cosmetic mesotherapy unclear. [12] That review is much older and is better read as history.
What are the risks of face mesotherapy, and what should I watch for?
Common effects are redness, swelling, bruising and small lumps; rarer but more serious risks are infection, allergy and blocked blood vessels. [2][8][11] A 2024 review says the usual short-lived effects are redness and swelling for a few hours, with pain, occasional bruising and needle marks. [2]
In the randomized trial of HA mesotherapy in the cheeks, 87.7% of participants had at least one adverse effect, mostly mild to moderate: bruising, swelling, papules and redness. [4] The review says non-cross-linked HA and PN usually cause small lumps that clear, while synthetic PLA products can cause more visible, longer-lasting lumps. [2]
Infection is a real report. An outbreak of deep skin infections with nontuberculous mycobacteria followed mesotherapy, and the authors linked it to poor cleaning of a multi-needle injection device with tap water. [11] The Italian Society of Mesotherapy says reported infections were mainly due to poor hygiene, an inappropriate setting or non-professional staff, and does not recommend self-injection. [1]
The 2024 review warns that substances approved only for topical use, if injected, can bring immunogenic particles into the skin and cause allergy or foreign-body granulomas, so only products approved for injection in humans should be used. [2]
On 19 March 2026 the Thai FDA warned that mesoserum registered as a cosmetic must not be injected: cosmetics are for external use and have not been assessed for injection. Injectable products must be registered as drugs or medical devices and given by a specialist doctor in a licensed facility. [9] The 2023 notice also said that "passed the Thai FDA" does not mean safe to inject, because registered products fall into several types by risk level. [10]
What should I ask the doctor before a skin booster injection?
Ask for the name and registration number of the substance, your allergy and medicine history, and which symptoms mean you should return at once. [8][9] The Thai FDA advises asking to check the product's FDA number on www.fda.moph.go.th before treatment, and to avoid the service if the provider cannot show it. [9]
The contraindications and precautions below come from the label of one FDA-approved HA gel. Use them as sample questions; the real restrictions for your product must come from that product's own documents. [8]
That label says to tell the doctor at once about changes in vision, stroke-like symptoms such as sudden trouble speaking or numbness or weakness in the face, arms or legs, white-looking skin, or unusual pain during or after treatment. [8] For aftercare see [[skin-booster-results-and-aftercare]], and for comparing options see [[skin-booster-which-for-which-skin]].
- What is the substance, who makes it, and is it registered with the Thai FDA as a drug or medical device? Ask to see the number and check it on www.fda.moph.go.th. [9][10]
- Have you ever had a severe allergy, an allergy to lidocaine, or an allergy to HA fillers? The label of one HA gel bars use in people with these histories. [8]
- Is there a wound, pimple, rash, hives, cyst or infection on the area? The same label says to postpone injection until it heals. [8]
- What medicines do you take, such as aspirin, ibuprofen or blood thinners, which may increase bruising or bleeding? [8]
- Do you plan a laser, peel or other procedure? There is a risk of inflammation; the review suggests doing it before the injection or leaving a gap. [2][8]
- Are you pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medicines that suppress immunity? The label says safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been studied, and immune-suppressing therapy raises infection risk. [8]
- How will the doctor judge whether your skin improved, and what happens if a lump or other problem appears? [2][5]
FAQ
What is mesotherapy for the face?
It is the injection of small amounts of a substance at many points into the dermis to care for facial skin, using substances such as hyaluronic acid, vitamins and amino acids. [1][3] "Glow" has no standard measure. [5]
Is face mesotherapy the same as a skin booster?
They overlap a lot. Mesotherapy names the injection technique, while skin booster names a group of products injected to improve skin quality, so ask the doctor which substance is used rather than relying on the name. [1][2]
What is injected in a skin booster treatment?
Reviews list hyaluronic acid, vitamin and amino acid mixes, PN, collagen, intradermal botulinum toxin and collagen stimulators. Each group has different evidence and risks. [2][3] See [[skin-booster-which-for-which-skin]].
Is face mesotherapy safe?
There is no single answer. Redness, swelling, bruising and small lumps are common. [2] In one trial 87.7% had at least one adverse effect, mostly mild to moderate. [4] Risk is higher with cosmetics or substances not approved for injection, or in unhygienic settings. [1][2][9]
Who can inject face mesotherapy?
The Thai FDA says it must be a specialist doctor in a licensed facility. [9] The Italian Society of Mesotherapy does not recommend self-injection. [1]
How soon does a skin booster show results?
There is no standard number of days. The trial reviewed here measured results 1 month and 3 months after treatment ended, not day by day. [4] See [[skin-booster-results-and-aftercare]].
