Skin Booster Results and Aftercare: How Long Until You See Results, and What to Avoid After Injection

In short

  • There is no standard number of days. Studies take the first measurement 1 month after the last injection, and early redness and swelling can hide the result. [2][3][4]
  • For the first 24 hours, limit strenuous exercise, strong sun, heat and alcohol, and ask the doctor when makeup is allowed. [3]
  • Results are not permanent. Vision changes, white skin or unusual pain mean calling the doctor at once. [3]

How long do skin boosters take to show results?

There is no standard number of days. The studies reviewed took their first measurement 1 month after the last injection, not in days. [2][4] The authors of a 2024 review also say standards for skin boosters still need to develop and objective measurement is hard, [1] so nobody can give a fixed number of days with evidence. [1][2][4]

In a randomized, evaluator-blind trial of a HA gel injected into the dermis of the cheeks, raters scored results 1 month after the last injection. 57.9% had cheek skin at least one grade smoother, against 4.5% of the untreated group, and the result held through 6 months of follow-up. [2] The manufacturer sponsored the study. [2]

Another randomized trial, of non-cross-linked HA in 55 women, injected one cheek with HA and the other with saline. An instrument-measured stiffness parameter (E1) fell 10.9% at 1 month and 10.5% at 3 months after the last injection versus baseline, which the authors read as better elasticity, but against the saline side the difference at 3 months did not reach statistical significance. [4] The manufacturer funded this study. [4]

What you see in the first week may therefore be redness, swelling or small bumps from the injection rather than the effect of the substance. [1][3] If you are unsure what face mesotherapy is, read [[meso-face-glow-vs-skin-booster]], and for choosing a substance read [[skin-booster-which-for-which-skin]].

Labelling and studies report redness, swelling, bumps and bruising early on. Most settle within 7 days, but some last longer. [1][3] The 2024 review says mild redness and swelling usually last a few hours after the procedure, with possible pain, bruising or needle marks. [1] Another source calls mild pain, redness, swelling and bruising common and expected short-term effects. [5]

The table summarizes the labelling of one US FDA-approved HA gel and the review. It is an overview, not a schedule for every substance. [1][3]

What should I avoid after skin booster injections?

The labelling of a US FDA-approved HA gel advises limiting strenuous exercise, strong sun, heat and alcohol during the first 24 hours. [3] There is no single list of restrictions for every substance, because substances and techniques differ, so the injecting doctor's advice comes first. [1][3]

The list below comes from one product's labelling and a review. Use it as sample questions for the doctor.

  • Strenuous exercise, strong sun or heat in the first 24 hours, which can increase redness, swelling or itching at the injection site. [3]
  • Alcohol in the first 24 hours; the labelling groups it with the two items above. [3]
  • Applying makeup before asking; the labelling says to ask the doctor when it can be applied. [3]
  • Laser, chemical peels or other planned procedures without telling the doctor, because of a possible inflammatory reaction at the site. The review suggests scheduling energy-based devices some weeks after booster injections, or doing them beforehand. [1][3]
  • Taking aspirin, ibuprofen or blood thinners without telling the doctor, since bruising or bleeding at the site may increase. [3]
  • Massaging, pressing or touching the area yourself. For some substances, such as PLA, protocols have the doctor ask for massage after injection, so do only what the doctor says. [1]
  • Treating a lump or other problem yourself. The doctor chooses the remedy, such as medicines or an enzyme that dissolves HA. [1][3]

How long do skin booster results last?

Results are not permanent. One HA gel's labelling says results lasted 6 months in most participants, and repeat injections are usually needed to maintain them. [3] In the study group, 56% still had smoother cheek skin at 6 months, against 58% at 1 month, [3] which means the rest did not meet this study's measure of lasting improvement.

Duration differs by substance. The review reports a randomized trial of HA with glycerol that found hydration gains for up to 16 weeks in the group given multiple treatments, and up to 9 months after the last injection, especially in people with dry skin. [1] For PN, a European consensus cited in the review says effects typically last 6 to 12 months after a full course of treatment. [1]

In short, no single figure fits everyone. It depends on the substance, the person's skin and how the doctor injects. [1] The number and spacing of injections is the doctor's call, so this article does not state one. [3]

Which symptoms after injection mean calling the doctor?

The labelling says to call the doctor at once for vision changes, signs of a stroke, white skin or unusual pain during or soon after injection. [3] The reason is a very rare but serious risk, accidental injection into a blood vessel, which is reported to cause vision problems, blindness, stroke, scabs or permanent scarring. [3]

  • Changes in vision. [3]
  • Signs of a stroke, such as sudden trouble speaking, numbness or weakness in the face, arms or legs, trouble walking, a drooping face, severe headache, dizziness or confusion. [3]
  • A white appearance of the skin in the treated area. [3]
  • Unusual pain during or soon after the injection. [3]
  • Significant pain away from the injection site. [3]
  • Redness or visible swelling that lasts more than a few days. [3]
  • Anything new weeks or months later, such as a lump or bump. In the study, 3 participants had lumps that went away on their own 12 to 15 months later. [3]

What should I check before injection to lower the risks afterwards?

Check that the product is registered with the Thai FDA, that a doctor injects it, and that sterile single-use equipment is used, because skin infections after aesthetic procedures are reported. [6][7] The Italian Society of Mesotherapy says the technique needs medical and pharmacological knowledge, disinfection rules, sterile single-use devices and a suitable setting. [7]

The Thai FDA warns against injecting cosmetic mesotherapy serums into the skin and advises checking the registration number before using a service. [6] To choose a substance and prepare questions for the doctor, read [[skin-booster-which-for-which-skin]], and to see how this differs from fillers read [[skin-booster-vs-filler]].

FAQ

How long do skin boosters take to show results?

There is no standard number of days. The studies reviewed measured results 1 month after the last injection. [2][4] Early redness and swelling can hide the result, [1][3] and results differ by substance and person. [1]

What should I avoid after skin booster treatment?

The labelling of a US FDA-approved HA gel advises limiting strenuous exercise, strong sun, heat and alcohol for the first 24 hours and asking the doctor when makeup is allowed. [3] Real advice depends on the substance, so follow the injecting doctor.

How long does swelling last after skin booster injections?

The labelling says most side effects settle within 7 days but some last longer. [3] In the study group 79.4% had a reaction at the injection site and 9.5% had one lasting more than 30 days. [3] Call the doctor if redness or swelling lasts more than a few days. [3]

How long do skin booster results last?

Not permanent. One HA gel was reported to last 6 months in most participants, with repeat injections usually needed. [3] Other substances differ; a European consensus cited in a review says PN effects typically last 6 to 12 months. [1]

Can I have a laser after skin booster injections?

Tell the doctor first, because the labelling warns of a possible inflammatory reaction at the site. [3] A review suggests scheduling energy-based devices some weeks after booster injections, or doing them beforehand. [1] The doctor sets the timing.

Which symptoms after injection need urgent help?

Vision changes, signs of a stroke, white skin or unusual pain during or soon after injection call for contacting the doctor at once. [3]
