What is Belotero Lips?

Belotero Lips is a cross-linked hyaluronic acid filler for the lips, made by Anteis SA of Merz Aesthetics in Switzerland.

In short

  • It contains 0.3% lidocaine hydrochloride to reduce pain at the injection site.
  • It is supplied in a 0.6 ml pre-filled glass syringe, one syringe and two sterile needles per box.
  • The Belotero Lips line has two versions, Shape and Contour. Both contain the same lidocaine and come in 0.6 ml syringes. Only a licensed healthcare provider injects it.

The gel and what is in the box

The maker classes it as a cross-linked sodium hyaluronate gel, an injectable biodegradable implant for lip enhancement.

The gel sits in phosphate buffer at pH 7, sterilised by moist heat, in a single-use glass syringe. According to the maker's instructions, each box holds one leaflet, one syringe, two traceability labels and two sterile needles.

Risks and who should not have it

The maker states that it must be injected by an authorised healthcare provider with the training and experience, who knows the vascular anatomy of the lips. A buyer should never inject it themselves.

The instructions list these contraindications: known allergy to a component, including hyaluronic acid, lidocaine or other amide-type local anaesthetics; pregnancy and breast-feeding; age under 18; a general infection; and active autoimmune disease.

It must not be injected into blood vessels, into inflamed or infected skin, or into an area treated before with a permanent filler. The injecting doctor explains the risks and side effects before treatment.
