What is Radiesse Classic?

Radiesse Classic is a calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) filler from Merz Aesthetics, not a hyaluronic acid product. The maker calls it an injectable implant, supplied in a pre-filled syringe.

In short

  • It holds synthetic CaHA particles of 25–45 microns suspended in a gel of sterile water for injection, glycerin and sodium carboxymethylcellulose.
  • Each unit is one pre-filled syringe of 0.8, 1.5 or 3.0 cc.
  • The maker says the user should be a licensed healthcare provider with the training to know the anatomy at the injection site. A buyer should never inject it themselves.

Areas listed in the maker's instructions

Radiesse is intended for soft tissue augmentation of the face and the back of the hands, and the listed areas are the nasolabial folds, the cheeks, the marionette lines, the jawline and the back of the hands.

The doctor decides the area, amount and method.

Contraindications, warnings and side effects

The contraindications in the instructions include inflammation or infection in the area to be treated, a history of severe allergy or several severe allergies, allergy to a component, a tendency to inflammatory skin conditions, hypertrophic scars or keloids, foreign bodies such as liquid silicone in the area, systemic disorders that cause poor wound healing, and bleeding disorders.

The maker says Radiesse is not for the glabellar or nose area, because localised necrosis was seen more often there, and it warns that injection into a blood vessel may cause vessel occlusion, ischaemia or loss of vision.

Side effects seen in clinical trials were mostly mild and short, such as bruising, swelling, redness, pain and itching.

The name used in published papers, and how the maker describes it

The maker describes it as a sterile, latex-free, non-pyrogenic injectable implant that is semi-solid and cohesive.

A published paper on the rheology of Radiesse calls this original product CaHA-CMC, to separate it from Radiesse (+) and the version with lidocaine.

Frequently asked questions

Is Radiesse a hyaluronic acid filler?

No. Radiesse uses CaHA, a different substance from hyaluronic acid. Ask the injecting doctor what that difference means for you.

Who makes Radiesse?

Merz Aesthetics, which according to the maker's instructions is a trademark of Merz Pharma GmbH & Co. KGaA.

How should Radiesse be stored?

The maker says to keep it at a controlled room temperature of 15–25 °C and not to use it after the expiry date printed on the label.

Are fillers dangerous?

Every filler carries risks. The Radiesse instructions list contraindications, warnings and side effects, so only a licensed healthcare provider should inject it, and the doctor explains the risks before treatment.

How much is Radiesse Classic?

The price depends on the model and the quantity.
