What is Restylane Refyne?

Restylane Refyne is a cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA) filler gel of non-animal origin with 0.3% lidocaine hydrochloride, made by Q-Med AB (Galderma) in Sweden. It comes in a 1 mL plastic syringe with two 30G needles.

In short

  • Each 1 mL of gel holds 20 mg/mL hyaluronic acid, 3 mg/mL lidocaine hydrochloride and phosphate buffered saline. The needles are ultra-thin wall, 30G x 1/2 inch. The product is single-use and includes labels for the patient's record.
  • The box reads Restylane REFYNE, The Emervel collection (Injectable Gel with Lidocaine). Thai-label and imported packs are available.
  • The maker allows it to be injected only by practitioners licensed under local law and trained in injection technique.

Indications in the maker's documents

The maker says the gel is used to add volume to facial tissue, and lists these indications: correcting moderate wrinkles, and shaping the lips, the cheeks and the tear trough.

The doctor chooses the area, depth and technique for each person.

Contraindications and warnings

It must never be injected into a blood vessel. The maker says this can block the vessel and cut off or kill tissue, and rare serious events have been reported, such as blindness or abnormal vision, stroke or brain bleeding, and skin necrosis. If vision changes, stroke-like symptoms, blanching of the skin or unusual pain appear during or soon after injection, injection must stop at once and a doctor be seen.

The Instructions for Use list as contraindications: a history of streptococcal protein allergy, severe allergies such as anaphylaxis or multiple severe allergies, and allergy to lidocaine or amide-type local anaesthetics.

The maker says to postpone use when the injection area or nearby skin is inflamed, infected or has a tumour. People who bleed easily or take antiplatelet drugs, thrombolytics or anticoagulants may bruise or bleed more, and safety in pregnancy, breastfeeding and under 18 years has not been established.

What may follow the injection

The maker lists bruising, redness, itching, swelling, and pain or tenderness at the injection site, which usually settle within a few days to a week.

Until the first swelling and redness have settled, avoid intense sun, UV and extreme temperatures. Ask the injecting doctor before laser, chemical peels or other skin-stimulating procedures.

Frequently asked questions

Can Restylane Refyne be injected at home?

No. A doctor should always inject it, because accidental injection into a blood vessel is a serious risk the maker warns about.

Where is Restylane Refyne made?

It is made by Q-Med AB in Uppsala, Sweden, a company in the Galderma group that owns the Restylane brand.

How long does Restylane filler last?

It depends on the person and the area treated, and the injecting doctor explains it at the consultation. The gel is hyaluronic acid, which is biodegradable.

How is Restylane Refyne stored?

Store at no more than 25 °C, do not freeze, and keep out of sunlight. The maker says not to use it if the gel in the syringe looks cloudy. It is single-use, so any remainder is discarded right after the procedure.

Why is lidocaine added to Restylane Refyne?

The 0.3% lidocaine hydrochloride helps reduce pain during the injection.

How much is Restylane Refyne?

The price depends on the model and the quantity.
