What is Restylane SubQ Lidocaine?

Restylane SubQ Lidocaine is a stabilized hyaluronic acid (HA) filler gel with 0.3% lidocaine hydrochloride from Galderma, made by Q-Med AB in Sweden. It comes as one prefilled 2 mL glass syringe per box.

In short

  • According to the MIMS Australia listing, each 1 mL holds 20 mg of stabilized hyaluronic acid of non-animal origin and 3 mg of lidocaine (lignocaine) hydrochloride. It is a ready-to-use gel in a single-use syringe.
  • It differs from Restylane Lyft and Volyme, which are separate products. SubQ has its own instructions, and a 2006 paper in Dermatologic Surgery describes it as the thicker version of Restylane.
  • The box label reads SUBQ Lidocaine, Injectable Gel with Lidocaine, 2 mL, with the Galderma name. Only a licensed doctor assesses and injects it.

Where it is used, according to the references

MIMS Australia says Restylane SubQ Lido is used for facial tissue augmentation and facial contouring, for example of the cheeks or chin, and is injected only subcutaneously or supraperiosteally.

A 2006 paper in Dermatologic Surgery reports its use in the upper cheeks and the chin. The doctor chooses the area, depth and technique for each person.

Contraindications and risks of Restylane SubQ

MIMS lists these contraindications: allergy to amide-type local anaesthetics, injection into a blood vessel, bleeding disorders or use of thrombolytics and anticoagulants, re-sterilized product, and mixing with other products before injection.

The US FDA lists the common side effects of fillers as bruising, redness, swelling, pain and itching. The serious event is accidental injection into a blood vessel, which can cause tissue death, vision loss or blindness, or stroke, so a licensed, trained health professional must inject.

Tell the doctor about drug allergies, medicines and supplements, any bleeding disorder, and earlier filler treatments. If anything unusual happens after the injection, tell the injecting doctor straight away.
