What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator marketed by Galderma and made by Q-Med AB in Uppsala, Sweden. It is a sterile freeze-dried powder in a glass vial, available as an imported or a Thai-label version.

In short

  • Each vial contains PLLA 150 mg, sodium carboxymethylcellulose 90 mg and non-pyrogenic mannitol 127.5 mg, 367.5 mg in all according to the leaflet. That is the weight of the dry powder, not the volume of a ready-to-inject liquid.
  • The leaflet describes one vial for one patient in one session. The vial is single-use and leftovers are discarded. Do not use it past its expiry date or when the carton, vial or cap is damaged.
  • The maker says to keep the powder at room temperature up to 30 °C and never to freeze it.

What to tell the doctor before the injection

Mention allergies to ingredients such as carboxymethylcellulose or mannitol, infection or inflammation at the proposed site, pregnancy or breastfeeding, medicines and supplements, and earlier filler or collagen-stimulator injections.

The doctor decides whether to proceed, defer or investigate further. A new clinic calls for a fresh assessment instead of reusing someone else's plan.

How Sculptra differs from hyaluronic acid fillers

Hyaluronic acid fillers are gels of hyaluronic acid; Sculptra consists of PLLA particles that are mixed with sterile water before use. Other brands may rely on other materials such as polycaprolactone or PDLLA.

Frequently asked questions

What is PLLA?

PLLA is poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic biodegradable polymer and the main ingredient of Sculptra according to its leaflet. How it applies to you is for the doctor to explain after examining your skin and reviewing your medical history.

How does Sculptra differ from Radiesse?

Compare each brand's maker, main ingredient and leaflet. Sculptra is Galderma's PLLA product; the other brand has its own documents. Numbers on boxes cannot be converted across brands, and the doctor picks the product that suits each person.

Who injects Sculptra?

A licensed doctor prepares and injects it; the buyer should not mix it beforehand. Ask about possible side effects and how to reach the clinic afterwards.

How does a dry powder in a vial differ from a ready-made gel?

The powder is not ready to inject. It is mixed with sterile water before use, and the doctor chooses how to prepare and administer it after assessment.

How much is Sculptra?

The price depends on the model and the quantity.
